Rain is very important for life because it brings us the water we need. However, because of pollution, the rain is becoming more dangerous for every living creature. This kind of rain is known as acid rain.
Acid Rain is caused by sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide released from factories to the air, or pollution. A lot of this pollution comes from power plants that burn coal, to make electricity. We use this electricity to make our lights and our TVs work. Pollution can also come from the cars and trucks people drive. When the chemical is released into the air, they mix with the cloud which will cause acid rain.
Acid Rain damages the environment. For trees and plants, the acid takes away important minerals from the leaves and the soil. Without them, trees and plants will be too weak to fight against illnesses. Acid rainwater soaks into the soil and flows into lakes. Some of the life in the lakes such as fish and plants may also end up dying because they cannot survive in acidic lakes. Beside these, acid rain also affects our health. When we breathe in acid air pollution, we can have breathing problems and over time can cause asthma or cancer. Other than living things, acid rain can also ruin buildings and metal objects because the acid “eats” into stone and metal. This will cause corrosion or rust formation when they are left outdoor.

The US Environment Protection Agency (EPA) execute the Acid Deposition Control Program to reduce the emission of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. They make use of alternate energy sources such as solar energy and wind energy, to make electricity.
In order to stop the formation of acid rain, I will turn off the lights in empty rooms, not use the air conditioner, tell my parents to install fluorescent light bulb instead of incandescent light bulbs. When the distant to a place is short, I will walk or ride a bicycle instead of taking a vehicle.
